1996 Olympic Torch Relay
One of our proudest accomplishments to date is the participation
of the Vitalizer in the 1996 Olympic Torch Relay and Olympic Games.
In mid 1995, Petroleum Technologies
LLC was honored to be approached by the coordinating team of the Torch Relay. They heard of the significant fuel savings and pollution reductions achieved with the Vitalizer, and were
interested in having the Torch Relay vehicles equipped with this Advanced Fuel/Pollution Control Technology for the purpose
of significantly reducing the effects of vehicular pollution and contamination on the runners and support staff.
Due to this unique situation of slow moving vehicles, and dense
caravan, certain people were going to be exposed to the emissions of a covered 15,000 miles at speeds below 5 mph. Health and well-being issues, along with significant fuel savings, motivated the directors of the Torch
Relay to have the Vitalizer installed.
Petroleum Technologies LLC agreed to install the Vitalizer
on a number of the vehicles. These included shuttle buses, media vehicles, EMS
vehicles, courtesy vehicles, motorcycles, and even the actual vehicle directly in front of the Torch carrier.
The participation in this event and the fact they wanted those
vehicles to stay equipped with the Vitalizer even during the games, proved to us the value of high profile events, and the
benefits of participating in them from a public relations standpoint.
The same committee who requested the Vitalizer for Atlanta then contacted Petroleum Technologies LLC . They were interested in exploring the possibility of having the Vitalizer participate in Nagano and Australia
in the coming games. Our participation with the Olympic Torch Relay has proven
to be an incredible asset. It has facilitated product introductions in many cases
with companies not otherwise interested in this type of technology.
For 84 days, a moving caravan of over 40 vehicles escorted the Olympic Flame
over 15,000 miles at running speeds averaging 5 mph, creating an unprecedented demand on vehicle performance. The long hours, slow speeds, and high temperatures the caravan vehicles faced had required the use of an
Advanced Fuel Performance Technology system that reduces harmful vehicle emissions while increasing fuel efficiency.
“The position of the Torchbearer among the caravan vehicles,
and the long distances traveled, required logistical organizers to look for a product that would both improve the air quality
surrounding the Torchbearers and extend gas mileage,” stated Luis Gomes, inventor of the Vitalizer, and President of Petroleum Technologies LLC . “We are very satisfied with the performance of the Vitalizer on the caravan vehicles, and we believe
our Advanced Fuel Performance Technology system provides many benefits when vehicle demands are so extensive.”
“We chose a product for our vehicles that specifically addressed
the needs of a multi-jurisdiction, cross-country relay.” Said Steve McCarthy,
caravan manager for the 1996 Olympic Torch Relay and President of ALEM Competition Services.
“Our top priority is the safety of the Torchbearers, and vehicle testing has shown a reduction of the harmful
emissions with the addition of the Vitalizer on our caravan vehicles.”
